Catalog note / 解説
I am offering here an extraordinary woodblock and frottage I believe to be by Shuzo Ikeda (1922- ). This piece appears to be a woodblock and frottage (perhaps a worked texture from the wood) on paper, measures 12" x 8" (image) and is in good condition. The work is signed in ink lower right, dated what appears to be 1956, notated in Japanese, numbered 13/20 and housed in a fine black frame. There are several Ikedas, including one Masuo with a high auction record for a frottage in the Davenport, so I'm not totally sure which one this is. It does fit the description of Shuzo's work, but has a more powerful edge than the images I've seen on the internet, possibly an earlier work.
