Catalog note / 解説
This print is from a series entitled New Portraits of Kabuki Actors, published by Watanabe Shozaburo. In the Kabuki, Sambaso is an auspicious dance performed at the opening ceremony of a new theatre, at the New Year, or opening of the theatrical season. Sambaso is always colorfully dressed with a high hat known as konsaki eboshi. Natori Shunsen was the pre-eminent portraitist of Kabuki actors of the 20th century.
