Catalog note / 解説

Jitsukawa Enjaku II (1831-85) was an actor representative of the Kamigata (Kyoto/Osaka area) Kabuki of the nineteenth century. In this print, he is portrayed in the role of Danshichi Kurobei in the Kabuki play Summer Festival (Mirror of Naniwa). Shunsen has possibly captured the actor at the moment before he transforms from an unshaven figure to an otokodate (chivalrous man considered to be a champion of the lower classes). The close-up portrait of this handsome actor must have attracted many female fans. (from Natori Shunsen exhibition 8/7/2006-)
