Sunday, 5 February 2006 Kuchi-e: The People of the Sea Artist: Tomioka Eisen Format: Aiban yoko-e: 9" x 13" approx Subject: An extraordinary design with creatures wearing sea anemone armour fighting with Negroes. Tomioka Eisen was born in Nagano prefecture under the name of Hidetaro. He went to Tokyo to study drafting and was employed by the army as a civilian. Later he resigned from the army and became a full time illustrator. Most of his works were illustrations for newspapers, journals and kuchi-e. Date: c.1900 Condition: Fine. Never folded.
