Catalog note / 解説
The Shugaku-in Imperial Villa is a set of gardens and outer buildings (mostly tea houses) in the hills of the eastern suburbs of Kyoto. The Villa’s construction was initiated by retired Emperor Go-Mizunö, in the year 1655. In this print, Saitö represents the stylized curvilinear shapes of a stone lantern (törö), a garden path, mounds of grass, and trees trimmed into round forms. These motifs resemble contemporaneous surrealist and minimalist sculptures such as the work of Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). This print superbly blends elements of both Asian and Western culture.
