Rain at Yabakei, 1918 (fine 1970’s woodblock reprint) Hashigushi Goyo (1880 - 1921) Rain at Yabakei- The scene is from Goyo's boyhood region a place he remembered with great fondness. Goyo melds the great Japanese woodblock landscape tradition, in a print that reminds us of Hiroshige, with western landscape art. The scene could almost be rural France. The colorful rocks, grass and figures stand out against the rolling gray hills softened by the heavy rainfall. The vertical sheeting rain is clearly a nod to the art of Hiroshige.
