Catalog note / 解説

Dated and signed, Taisho kyunen nigatsu Goyo ga (Taisho 9 [1920], 2nd month, by Goyo). Self-published by the artist in 1920. A bust portrait of a maiko (apprentice geisha, identified by her hairstyle and hair ornaments) applying lipstick while looking at a compact mirror. Her green kimono is decorated with butterflies and roundels of white chidori (plovers) on waves; the collar of her under-robe with tan millet on a soft red ground; and her obi with a geometric pattern in deep maroon and blue. The soft yellowish-tan ground is embellished with mica.
