Catalog note / 解説
Toshihide (1863-1925) began this series of popular scenes from Kabuki and Noh plays in 1893. The theme of this particular print is the extravagance of Hojo Takatoki, regent during the time of the Kamakura shogunate, as described in the Taiheiki (Chronicle of the Great Peace). Takaoki was very fond of dengaku (ritual dancing and music) and spent enormous amounts of time and money on it. He is shown here enjoying the performance of a troupe of dengaku entertainers who are really tengu (goblins) in disguise. Materials: Colour woodblock print
