Catalog note / 解説
Nishikawa Sukenobu was one of the pioneers of ukiyo-e printmaking during the early 18th century and is best known for his depictions of women from different social classes. This image of a Buddhist nun being seduced by a man brings to light a surprising aspect of the sexual culture in early modern and pre-modern Japan: itinerant Buddhist nuns (bikuni) were often forced to resort to prostitution for their financial survival.
