Before treatment: Although in relatively good condition, this landscape sketch displayed a host of minor condition problems that were ameliorated through classic paper conservation techniques. The drawing had been folded and showed strong vertical creases, and there were subtle but visible brown tidelines, foxing, cockling, and mild grime throughout. Additionally, poor quality acidic paper tapes were affixed along its upper edge. Treatment consisted of gently surface-cleaning the support and using a poultice to remove the paper hinges. The staining and creases were minimized by means of bathing in pH-adjusted distilled water and flattening under blotters and weights. - “Prelude to the print…
