Catalog note / 解説
Following the signing of trading treaties in the 1850s, a number of ports in Japan were opened up for overseas trade. Previously limited to the Dutch in Nagasaki, the conspicuous presence of Europeans and Americans in Japan was picked up in commercially published prints. This woodblock print juxtaposes a woman in European-style dress (possibly Dutch) with two imported creatures, a leopard and a cockatoo. The display of exotic animals was a popular spectacle around this time, but imported prints and picture books were also used as source material by artists. Materials: Colour woodblock print on paper
