Catalog note / 解説
View of the Shinagawa Bay from the foot of Atagoyama, by Shotei Hokuju (Active early 19th century) Hokuju was one of Hokusai's pupils and proved an able successor to Hokusai's western style images. This print shows Atagoyama in the Shiba area, with a view from the foot of this mountain across the Shinagawa Bay. The strange shading method used on the side of the hill is particularly striking. And it is hard to imagine this scene in today's urban Tokyo, not only has Mt. Atago undergone a radical transformation, a view from there across Shinagawa Bay seems unimaginable
