Hokuju designed many prints in Western style, of which this is one of the most beautiful. The effects of light and shade are emphasized here through the many shadows cast on both land and water. Although the artist's signature has been trimmed off this print, it can be identified as a Hokuju by comparison with signed impressions in other collections. (from Hokusai His Students exhibition 1/30/2007-) Hokuju was one of Hokusai's most talented students. He designed many prints in Western style, of which this is one of the most beautiful.
