Tuesday, 25 October 2005 ARTIST: Rakuzan. FORMAT: 16 by 22 ins SERIES: Birds and flowers of Japan. DATE: ca. 1930 DESCRIPTION: Autumn. CONDITION: Some toning to margins, otherwise good impression, colour and condition. NOTE: These extraordinarily exquisite kacho-ga are a technical tour-de-force. Multiple woodblocks were cut and up to 240 separate printing operations were performed in creating each design. No expense was spared in creating the effect Rakuzan wanted - each sheet is embellished with metallic pigments, principally silver, gold, and bronze and occasionally gofun (Chinese white, derived from crushed oyster shell).
