Catalog note / 解説

The designs on fan prints are a reflection of summer. Here, charming-looking mosquitoes, actually one of the pests of Japanese summers, give form to the ‘mosquito storm’ mentioned in the poem at the bottom left. The V&A’s collection of Japanese fan prints is remarkable both for its size and variety. The artist who designed this print, Sakai Hôitsu, is best known as a painter of the classical-inspired Rimpa school, and fan prints by him are very rare. Materials: Woodblock printing
