Catalog note / 解説
The military procession along one of Japan’s main highways, the Tokaido, seen in the foreground of this print, is a product of over two hundred years of inward-looking feudal rule. The western ships outside the newly developed port of Yokohama in the distance, however, show that changes are already happening in Japan. Only five years after this print was made, the Tokugawa shogunate, which had ruled Japan since 1603, collapsed and power was restored to the emperor. Materials: Woodblock print on paper
