After the death of Lord Enya Hangan all his lands are confiscated and his retainers become ronin ( masterless samurai). Outside the gate of Hangan’s mansion his chief retainer Yuranosuke licks his master’s blood off the dagger he used to kill himself and vows to carry out the vendetta agains Lord Ko no Morono.
