Shin Hanga: Female Samurai Ghost Artist: Shima Seien Format: Dai Oban tate-e: 18" x 11.25" Subject: In the snow the magnificent design of a female ghost holding the sword with which she had disembowled herself. Seien is best known for this superb design and another from the same set 'The Departed Spirit of a Courtesan'.The woman artist, Shima Narie, was born in Sakai, in Osaka prefecture; eventually her family settled in Osaka. Narie's early period of study was entirely selfmotivated, and at the age of eighteen she first displayed her work in the sixth Bunten exhibition.
