Catalog note / 解説

Momotaro is a hero from Japanese folklore. He was born from a giant peach found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was the wife of a poor woodcutter. The couple adopted the boy as a present from the Gods, and named him Momotaro, ‘the peach boy’. Momotaro grew up to be a strong young boy and he went on a journey to the Island of the Devils to defeat Akandoji, the chief demon. On his way he met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant who became his companions. This print pictures a wrestling game between Momotaro and Kaidomaru (also known as Kintaro), who was raised by a witch on Mount Ashigara. Materials: Woodblock print on paper
