Catalog note / 解説
This is one of ten prints from a series by Kunisada (1786-1864), a commercially highly successful ukiyo-e artist who was especially well known for his work in the bijin-ga (beautiful women) genre. Ukiyo-e, 'pictures of the floating world', vividly portrayed (much of it racy) city life in the 18th and early 19th centuries for an enthusiastic audience. The woman in this particular print, with her Shimada-style coiffure, appears to be adjusting her make-up with a tissue taken from the folded bundle she is replacing in the overlap of her kimono. Materials: Woodblock print on paper
