Catalog note / 解説
This print by Kunisada (1786-1864), a prolific and commercially highly successful artist, is very unusual, not just among Kunisada's works but among <i>ukiyo-e</i> prints ('pictures of the the floating world') in general. As many as three ink blocks and four Prussian blue blocks were used to create a painterly effect in which just a few brushstrokes convey the vitality and fine build of the horse. The seal appears to have been stamped in later by hand, rather than having been printed by a woodblock. This extremely rare work may have been produced as an experiment or a gift, rather than to be sold. Materials: Colour woodblock print
