This <i>surimono</i> - print commemorating a poetry gathering - marks the thirteenth and seventeenth poetry gatherings held in rememberence of the deaths of, respectively, kabuki actors Asao Tamejûrô I and his son Asao Tamejûrô II. In the Edo period (1615-1868), kabuki actors often participated in wider cultural activities than just the theatre, for example poetry salons. Eleven poems offered at the memorial gathering are here printed to the left of a bunch of summer flowers. One of the verses is by Tamejûrô I's wife, Tomi.
