Tom Hammick was selected by Gill Saunders, the V&A’s Senior Curator of Prints, to be the recipient of the V&A Prize at the 2016 International Print Biennale in Newcastle (whereby the artist undertakes to donate a work to the V&A in return for which Gill Saunders publishes an essay about the prize-winning work on the V&A web site). This print is one of several inspired by opera. (In 2015 Hammick completed a year-long residency at English National Opera, and has designed for Glyndbourne). Violetta and Alfredo’s Escape is Hammick’s interpretation of a scene from Verdi’s opera La Traviata (which is itself based on Dumas’ novel La Dame aux Camellias).
