This is a unique print which combines several print techniques, exploring the theme of metamorphosis. Desmet works by cutting up and rearranging sections from her own wood-engravings to depict the evolution or deconstruction of images, creating a new unique image in the process. Her collage technique also allows her to use wood-engraving on a large scale rather than being limited to the size of a wood-block. She introduces colour by layering coloured papers behind translucent Japanese papers. Inspired in part by Rome, where she studied as Rome Scholar in printmaking in 1989-90, this image is of a fantastical architectural conceit, as are many of her prints.
