Works by Laura Owens (born USA 1970) are characterised by a self-consciously naïve style; they fluctuate between figuration and abstraction, often combining elements of colour-field painting, and abstract gestural marks, with delicately drawn trees, flowers, birds and animals. Her influences include European, Asian and American landscape painting, as well as the decorative arts. She often imitates the appearance of textiles such as appliqué and embroidery, paisley patterns, and motifs from kimonos and other Japanese textiles.
