From the series, "Taisho Shinsai Gashu" (Pictures of Taisho Earthquake). "Nigeba wo Ushinatta Hanazono Ike" (No Escape Route at Hanazono Pond). "Great Kanto Earthquake" September 1st in 1923, the massive earthquake jolted Kanto area. The collapsing building and the inferno followed the earthquake killed 140,000 people. It devastated Tokyo and the surrounding area. Hanazono-ike (Flower Garden Pond) was part of Yoshiwara pleasure district. Many courtesans and the guests jumped into the pond. But the fire came very close to the pond and the frightened people started to utter Buddhist chant.
