Catalog note / 解説

The Seven Gods of Good Fortune Arm-wrestling, by Oneisai (ca. 1750) You probably can't figure out what's going on here. The round white circle just below the center of the composition is where you would place a cylinder with an mirrored outer surface. You could then see what the image really looked like in the surface of the cylindrical mirror. This kind of picture was known as a saya-e or sword scabbard picture in Japan. This name derives from the fact that if you stand up the shiny lacquered scabbard of a sword, you can see strange forms reflected in its shiny surface.
