Sunday, 11 September 2005 Up for auction today is a Meiji era Japanese watercolor painting on paper. The artist (S. Yuwase or Sunwase) signed his name in the lower left-hand corner. This painting is dated Jan 1905 in a watermark in the paper that you see when you hold it up to a light, along with a watermark of "England" also. It was common for the professional Japanese watercolorist of the late 1880's and early 1900's to uses watercolor paper from England because this was a time when a couple great Art Teachers were coming to Japan to teach the Western style art of painting And we are lucky to find watercolor's on this kind of paper because it can date the piece down to month.
