Catalog note / 解説
Oryu, from the series Modern Women in the Mirror, by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864) This is one of a series showing women depicted in a mirror frame. The mirror is placed in the very middle of the composition, and the woman is drawn largely within that mirror. Is the woman reflected in the mirror? Or is she looking out from a circular hole? The viewer puzzles over the image. Kunisada often depicted some sort of alternative spatial dimension in his compositions. The contrast between the strong colors of red, green, black, and gold is also fascinating.
