Kunisada depicted many popular sumö wrestlers in his prints. Usually, the massive figures of Kunisada’s sumö wrestlers occupy most of the space in the print, as seen here. The wrestler’s arms and legs are open and the size of his feet is exaggerated. Sumö prints were as popular as prints of actors and beautiful women, functioning much like contemporary posters of celebrities. (from Oh Sumo! exhibition 5/7/07-)
