Catalog note / 解説
Classical Yamato-e style painting, which was only available to aristocrats and the wealthier warrior class, became familiar to town painters (machi-eshi ) such as Hiroshige by the mid-nineteenth century. Hiroshige's use of the Yamato-e style may have been related to the strict governmental laws banning the depiction of sumptuous items and Kabuki actors or famous courtesans in luxurious dress. The artist might have used the traditional style in order to avoid censure by the government. (from Tale of Genji exhibition 1/11/06-)
