Catalog note / 解説

Mount Fuji is visible between the high hills rising on either side of Lake Suwa, in modern Nagano Prefecture. The image is dominated by the broad expanse of the lake, given texture by the grain of the woodblock used to print the blue on the lower half. Ukiyo-e artists often took advantage of open areas in the composition to allow the wood grain to show through, which, far from being considered a technical defect, was appreciated as an innovative aesthetic effect. “Hokusai’s Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (09/24/2009-01/06/2010) ******************************
