Catalog note / 解説

The ox-carts beneath the rainbox in this uchiwa-e (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige indicate that the location is Kuruma-cho, an area on the Takanawa shoreline in the southern part of Edo, where oxen were kept to help with urban construction projects. The text on the billboard behind the red cartouche reads Ibakyu han, meaning 'published by Ibakyu'. Text on the billboard to the left reads tonen shincho daikichi rishi, meaning 'in the hope that this print, newly designed this year, will sell profitably'. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
