Catalog note / 解説

The moonlit view in this <i>uchiwa-e</i> (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige is taken from almost immediately below the Eitai Bridge, which spans the Sumida river just before it widens into Edo Bay. The buildings on the left mark the south-west extremity of the Honjo Fukagawa district. The presence of the island of Tsukudajima behind the anchored cargo ships is indicated by the two characters below and slightly to the right of the moon. The paper lantern partially visible in the boat to the right is marked with the <i>katakana</i> characters for 'hi' and 'ro', the first two syllables of Hiroshige's name. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
