Catalog note / 解説
In this <i>uchiwa-e</i> (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige we are party to the sense of anticipation awakened by a journey to the Yoshiwara licensed pleasure quarter in the northern part of Edo. The Shubi Pine Tree was a famous landmark that hung out over the Sumida river from the central pier of the Asakusa rice granary, a large complex of buildings that visitors travelling upstream by boat passed on their left between the Ryogoku and Azuma Bridges. <i>Shubi</i> means 'results', which in the context of visiting the Yoshiwara meant getting good value for money. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
