Catalog note / 解説

The text in the fan-shaped cartouche in this <i>uchiwa-e</i> (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige reads <i>Mizu - Ochanomizu josui no himasu Suidobashi areba gogyo no uchi mizu ni nazorau</i>, meaning 'Water - the square aqueduct that crosses by Suido Bridge suggests the comparison of Ochanomizu to water'. Here we are looking west along the Kanda river from just downstream of the aqueduct that carried water from the Kanda Water Supply to Edo Castle and the central parts of the city to the east. Suido Bridge itself is visible in the distance between the right-hand arches of the aqueduct. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
