Catalog note / 解説
This view of the Asakusa Kannon Temple in the <i>uchiwa-e</i> (rigid fan print) design by Hiroshige is taken from across the Sumida river at a point somewhere along the bank between the Azuma Bridge and the Mimeguri Shrine in the south-west corner of the Mukojima district of eastern Edo. Officially known as the Kinryuzan Sensoji, the Asakusa Kannon Temple was, and still is, the city's oldest and best-known Buddhist establishment. Its pagoda can be seen to the left, and the building to its right is the Hondo or Main Hall, the largest and most important building of the temple complex. Materials: Colour print from woodblocks
