Colour woodblock print, left sheet of an oban diptych. The kabuki actors Ichikawa Ebizo V as Benkei, clutching the fake subscription scroll in his left hand as he raises his staff with his right, about to strike the porter, and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Minamoto Yoshitsune disguised as the porter, in the play ‘The Subscription Scroll’ (‘Kanjincho’), from the ‘Kabuki Juhachiban’, by Namiki Gohei III with music by Kineya Rokusaburo IV; performed at the Kawarasaki-za in the 3rd month of 1840 (Tenpo 11).
