Catalog note / 解説

Many of the prints in Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series are bold images of the mountain that dominate the entire composition. In contrast, Hiroshige tends to present a more moderate view of Mount Fuji in the distance as a backdrop for human activity, often in several layered planes creating a recession in space. This simple depiction of Mount Fuji, accomplished with a single line, places the mountain as a comforting image of constancy within the ever-changing “floating world” of the late Edo period. “Hokusai’s Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (09/24/2009-01/06/2010) ******************************
