Catalog note / 解説
Suruga Bay, from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) In making this print, the artist Hiroshige was clearly aware of Hokusai's "Mt. Fuji beneath the Great Wave" print. The breaking waves, Mt. Fuji seen off in the distance between the waves are proof of this knowledge. But Mt. Fuji was by no means Hokusai's exclusive property. Hiroshige experimented with various forms of expression using Mt. Fuji, and this is a good example of the success of these experiments. A superb work alive with fascinating, undulating, swelling waves
