Catalog note / 解説
In this fan painting, Hiroshige renders a typical scene of commoners enjoying a boating party. Unlike other idealized images created by the artist (like Fireworks at Ryögoku nearby), this print is humorously realistic, showing people dancing on the roof of a boat in the background, and even a swimmer doing the backstroke while he precariously balances a fan between his toes. Although Hiroshige often is singled out for his serene landscapes and bold late compositions, it is prints such as this portraying everyday scenes that make him one of Japan’s most beloved artists. “Midsummer Night’s Pleasure” 08/05/2010-10/10/2010) **********************
