Catalog note / 解説
In the Edo period (1615-1868), fans provided a popular format for print designers’ ingenuity and imagination. They were mass-produced for popular consumption: their subjects reflecting the tastes and interests of their city-dwelling buyersers. This fan print shows the close bond between ukiyo-e and contemporary popular culture. Kuniyoshi depicts two scenes from plays that had been performed earlier in the year. In the right-hand image, he depicts two women, caricatured as toads, fighting in a garden; while on the left, he portrays a game of Toad-Tiger-Fox, much like our Scissors-Paper-Stone. Materials: Woodblock print on paper
