Catalog note / 解説
Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645) was a Japanese swordsman famed for his distinctive style in the early Edo period (17th century). He became renowned through stories of his legendary swordsmanship in numerous duels. By the late Edo period, many popular novels portrayed Musashi as the main protagonist. Musashi was said to have traveled extensively throughout Japan while developing his martial skills. In this print, Musashi uses a huge pillar as his weapon as he fights with a number of opponents. Kuniyoshi skillfully captures the minute details of the costumes, facial expressions and poses of each subject in the composition.
