Catalog note / 解説
Colour woodblock print, oban tate-e. Nine portraits of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII; the first seven are from the play 'Date kurabe okuni kabuki', the other two are from the play 'Kanjincho', both produced at the Kawarazaki theatre in the third month of Kaei 2 (1849). The parts (top, right to left) 1) Otoko-no suke Teruhide, 2) Nikki Danjo Saemon, 3) Hosokawa Shuri-no-suke Katsumoto, 4) Ashikaga Sakingo Yorikane, 5) the wrestler Kinugawa Tanizo, 6) Dote Datetsu, 7) Yashio, elder sister of Nikki Danjo, 8) Benkei, 9) in offstage clothes.
