Catalog note / 解説
This print depicts the Nihon embankment leading to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter. A full moon lights the scene, revealing three men walking and another two bearing a palanquin with a more wealthy patron, possibly returning home from the pleasure quarter. The representation of the shadows of the figures, palanquin, clouds, and the use of a pseudo-chiaroscuro technique on the foliage of the trees, are reminiscent of Western copperplate engravings (and oil paintings), which already were being imported to Japan by the late 18th century. “Midsummer Night’s Pleasure” 08/05/2010-10/10/2010) **********************
