Catalog note / 解説

From the series Fifty-three Parallels for the Tokaido Road, which fluctuate between straightforward historical illustration and local legends and customs. Here Tamura Shogun (namely, Sakanoye Tamura-maro), directed by the bodhisattva Kannon in the form of a woman, about to kill the demon-deity of Mount Suzuka. In legend this incident took place during a punitive expedition against the rebel Abe no Takamaru.
