Catalog note / 解説
In 1281, an invasion by the Mongols—predicted by Nichiren in 1260 — occured. Kuniyoshi portrays the great storm that ultimately caused the Mongols’ defeat, a storm that owed its origin to the prayers of Nichiren. Also depicted here are the Mongol ships being battered by the terrible storm. The sailors who managed to land were slain on the shore by the Japanese, resulting in the total defeat of the Mongols.
