Catalog note / 解説
Colour woodblock print, an oban diptych from an album of 117 sheets. The kabuki actors (right sheet) Sawamura Shirogoro II as the attending lady (‘okujochu’) Daicho, Matsumoto Yonesaburo II as attending lady Yamanoi and Ichikawa Danjuro VII as Araotokonosuke, with (left sheet) Sanogawa Hanazuma IV as Suketsune’s younger sister (‘Suketsune imoto’) Naginoha, holding a halberd, Iwai Hanshro V as the wet nurse (‘menoto’) Masaoka with sword in hand, and Matsumoto Koshiro V as Tsurugisawa Danjo, with a scroll in his mouth; in the play ‘Shikisemono Soga no datezome’, (alternative title ‘Shikisezome Soga no datezome’), by Tsuruya Nanboku IV, performed at the Morita-za in the 1st month of 1813.
