Catalog note / 解説
Colour woodblock print, one sheet of an oban triptych. Two beauties are seated, one holding the black courtier's cap and flat wooden sceptre (shaku) that are part of male ceremonial court costume, (here associated with the courtier and poet Otomo no Kuronushi), while a younger girl hands her a poetry slip (tanzaku). On the floor between the two women is a tray on which is an inkstone, ink stick and brushes. Above is the title 'Fashionable Six Poets' (Furyu Rokkasen), with a famous 'waka' poem by the poet priest Kisen Hoshi and another by Otomo no Kuronushi.
