Catalog note / 解説
The Actor Iwai Kiyotaro I and his Attendant, by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) Today weekly magazines and television entertainment news programs discuss the entertainment world, and it was the same during Japan's Edo period. Of course there were no televisions or weekly magazines at the time, and mass communication resources were extremely limited. Ukiyo-e woodblock prints were the only media that provided both color and information. Actor prints were just like the fan club photographs of today, and the people who bought these prints thrilled at the beautified images of their favorites.
